Opinion Writing in Elementary English ESL

✍️ Writing Your Opinion: What Do You Think?

Today, we will learn how to write an opinion piece! This writing style lets you clearly share what you believe or feel about a topic and back up your idea with strong reasons.

1. What is an Opinion?

  • Definition: An opinion is what you think or feel. It is your personal view.

  • Opinion Writing: When you write an opinion, you state your view and then give reasons, facts, or examples to show why you believe it.

  • Key Idea: It is personal! It is not a news report; it's about your belief.

  • Example: "I believe recess should be longer because it helps me feel happy and ready to learn."

2. The Parts of Good Opinion Writing

A strong opinion paper has three main parts:

PartWhat to WriteExample
IntroductionState your Opinion clearly in one sentence."I think school lunches should be healthier."
Supporting DetailsGive Reasons and Facts. Use a separate paragraph for each reason."Healthy lunches give us energy. Also, they help us concentrate better."
ConclusionSum up (finish) your opinion by stating your reasons again briefly."For these reasons, healthier lunches will help all students."
Connecting WordsUse Transitional Words to link your ideas: because, also, in addition, therefore."I like art because it is relaxing. In addition, it makes me creative."

3. Steps for Writing Your Piece

  1. Step 1: Choose a Topic: Pick something you feel strongly about (like a favorite class, a school rule, or a community issue).

  2. Step 2: Write Your Opinion: Write one sentence that clearly states your view.

    • Example: "I believe art class is the most important subject."

  3. Step 3: Find Reasons (Brainstorm): List 2 or 3 reasons why you have this opinion.

    • Examples: "Art helps me relax." "Art lets me learn new things."

  4. Step 4: Organize: Make a simple outline (Introduction, Body Paragraphs, Conclusion).

  5. Step 5: Use Good Words:

    • Use strong, descriptive words (adjectives and adverbs). Instead of "nice art," say "vibrant art."

    • Use similes to make comparisons: "The art room is as fun as a carnival."

  6. Step 6: Revise and Edit: Check your work! Make sure your spelling, capitalization, and punctuation are correct. (Use a dictionary!)

4. Worked Example: Art Class

Let's write about why the art period should be longer:

SectionWhat to Write
Opinion Statement"I believe our art period should be longer."
Reason 1Reason: Art helps me feel calm and creative. Detail: Being creative helps me learn better in all my classes.
Reason 2Reason: A longer period gives me time to learn new techniques (ways to do something). Detail: I could learn how to mix colors better or try painting with oil pastels.
Conclusion"For these reasons, I strongly feel that more time for art will make school better for every student."

5. Quick Tips for Success ✅

  • Always start with a clear opinion first.

  • Outline your writing before you start writing full sentences, so your ideas flow smoothly.

  • Review your writing to make sure your reasons are clear and convincing!

6. Let's Outline

Before you write, you need to plan! Good writers always plan their work first.

Brainstorming is coming up with all your ideas about a topic. You don't have to use them all, but it helps to have a long list!

  1. Write Your Opinion: Start by writing your opinion statement at the top of a paper.

    • Example: Ice cream should be served for lunch.

  2. Ask "Why?": Now, ask yourself, "Why do I believe this?" Write down every reason you can think of. Do not stop until you have at least three reasons.

    • Example Reasons: (1) It tastes good. (2) It makes me feel happy. (3) It is easy to eat quickly.

  3. Choose the Best: Look at your list and pick the 2 or 3 strongest reasons. These will be your main points.

7. Your Turn:
